From the viewpoint of many local network observers (like a public Wi‑Fi network), your traffic is less readable. Meanwhile, the remote site you visit may see the VPN endpoint’s address rather than your original one.
What matters for operation is whether your device actually sends traffic through the tunnel consistently. Typical variables include the device’s network behavior, browser settings, DNS resolution path, whether certain apps bypass the VPN, and how the connection behaves when you switch networks or travel between locations.
Practical context for digital nomads
A realistic scenario is switching between airports, coworking spaces, and mobile data. In such travel patterns, the VPN can still help with privacy signals at the network level, but you may notice different speeds, more reconnecting, or intermittent failures depending on the Wi‑Fi quality and the route chosen.
