However, a VPN’s concepts and operation do not automatically translate into guaranteed anonymity, guaranteed safety, or guaranteed access.
If your goal is privacy while traveling, it helps to think in layers: the VPN affects traffic between your device and the VPN service, but your device configuration, app behavior, DNS settings, account activity, and the destination websites can still reveal information.

Imagine you connect from different countries, using public Wi‑Fi, mixed mobile networks, and unmanaged devices. You switch locations frequently, sometimes mid-session, and your VPN client negotiates or re-negotiates protocol behavior as conditions change.
In these circumstances, the most common limitations are not theoretical—they show up as usability and reliability problems. Latency, intermittent disconnects, captive portals, routing changes, and inconsistent DNS handling can break expected behavior. Even when encryption is present, your browsing may still be subject to tracking from websites, browser identifiers, or account-level logging.
Practical risks and limitations to understand

- No guarantee of anonymity or safety: A VPN can reduce certain risks, but it cannot eliminate all identifying pathways (device fingerprints, account logins, application telemetry, or traffic metadata exposed outside the encrypted segment).
- Variable performance and availability: Protocol operation and network conditions can change by time, location, Wi‑Fi environment, and device. Expect differences in speed and stability.
- Expectation gaps from changing claims: Real-world protocol behavior and provider practices can vary. Treat “protocol support” and similar statements as needing current verification rather than assuming permanence.
What to check to verify behavior (without relying on marketing)
Use checks that map to observable outcomes:
- Confirm IP and routing changes: After connecting, verify the apparent external IP/path using multiple independent tools. - Test DNS and leak resistance carefully: Check whether DNS queries follow the intended route when the VPN is active.
